This article provides an overview of the role of the foreign commercial houses of Valparaiso in the economic life of Chile during the first decades of the 20th century. Specific reference is made to their corporate structure, their role in the overseas trade of the country, their trading and agency businesses; their importance in nitrate and foreign exchange, their links with the nascent Chilean industries and the institutions that bound them together. Their decline after 1930 was due in part to the changes in the economic and political conditions of Chile, but also to their limited capital in relation to the size and requirements of the new mining and industrial sectors.

This article studies the changes in the popular struggle during the years between the Civil War of 1891 and the massacre at the Santa María School in Iquique (1907), from primary forms of social protest to strikes and labor petitions. The analysis of numerous mass movements permit an insight into the points of contact, the breaks and impasses in the transition from mob riots to te modern workers movement.

It explain when and why the violence of the underclass slowly decreased and gave way to orderly petitions, disciplined acts of pressure and an increasing tendency to negotiation, and establishes that the turning point in this evolution in the forms of struggle took place between 1902 and 1905. Although the perspective is national, attention is centered on three key areas: the nitrate region in the North, the principal cities of Central Chile and the coal mining region round the Gulf of Arauco.

Women in the War of the Pacific in more than one way. Some were "cantineras"; others stayed at home but helped according to their possibilities, and finally there were the camp followers, which are te object of this study. Most of them followed their husbands or friends, but there were also single women who simply wished to go to the battlefront and embarked in large numbers together with the troops. However, the problems created by so many females in the camps became evident after a few months, and the Governmentt issued several decreed forbidding women to travel in military transports. These orders were repeatedly flaunted with the help of the soldiers who even lent them their spare uniforms as a disguise. This explains the great number of women who returned together with the Chilean army in 1884, at the end of the war.

Since Chilean republic established its actual jurisdiction in the strait’s Magallanes region, in 1843, their rulers consider the introduction of agriculture as a necessary assumption for the development of the colonization and peopling of the southern territory. This paper gives an account of the successive trials done to introduce and cultivate vegetables and forage, and about their precarious results in the former Fuerte Bulnes during the first five years. Later on, with the change of the colonial settlement to Punta Arenas, the better conditions of soils and climate allow the strengthening and enlargement of the agricultural crops. In that way, through 1880 the activity could be considered as a interesting branch of the emerging magellanic economy, nevertheless with limited development possibilities at that moment.

Abstract

Valparaiso was the fastest growing town in Chile during the 19th century, to the extent that the original inhabitants became a minority in relation to the newcomers. The most important of these groups of immigrants were the foreign communities, on account of their economic and social influence. They left their mark not only in the daily life of the port but also in their wy of thinking and religious attitudes.

Valparaiso, in contrast to the rest of Chile, had an important group of noncatholics. The development and public manifestations of these dissidents, was due both to the growth in their numbers and to the weakness of the Catholic presence in that por during the first half of the 19th century. However, from the 1860s on, the situation tended to change due to difficulties faced by the protestants and freemasons, and the recovery of the Catholic Church under the apostolic governor Mariano Casanova. At the end of the century, Catholic worship who had remained aloof from the native population, began to make strong inroads in the midst thanks to the work of the Pentecostalists.

Historians have regularly assumed the transparency of census statistics on womens employment in Chile, which suggest a steady decline in female employment -particulary in industry- from the late nineteenth through the early twentieth century. Arguing that quantitative sources are like other historical documents social constructions, this article first explores the limitations of the Chilean census as an accurate measure of female economic activity. The article hen shows how, because the progressive "modernization" of the census implied substantive changes in the collection and interpretation of census data, womens economic activity became increasingly invisible as the century progressed. This critical reading of census materials allows us both to question contemporary assumptions about womens economic participation and to examine the changing notions of labor that were integral to the formation of state labor and welfare policies in early twentieth-century Chile.

Abstract

This article explores the political and social implications of the expansion of print culture in nineteenth-century Chile. It posits that Church and State responded in mardkedly different ways to the impact of literacy and the practice of reading books and newspapers. The article argues that liberal intellectuals and politicians were quicker to understand the potential of the written word for advancing cultural and political aims. The Church, for its part, was slower and even antagonistic to the employment of this medium. However, by the end of the century, both Church and State achieved a substantial understanding, and skill, in the use of print for the massive diffusion of information. This, in turn, meant the expansion of the political arena, and new terms as well as standards of political debate.
