From digital cinema to cloud computing in the film consumption of young Ecuadorians

Abstract

This research focuses on analysing how changes in cinematography since the advent of digital cinema have led to new forms of reception and appreciation of works of art by young people. To achieve this, a mixed methods analysis was used, which consisted of closed structured surveys and semi-structured interviews with those responsible for movie theatres in Quito. The results show that young people watch a considerable number of films, mostly of Hollywood origin, alone and at home. This indicates that young people are more focused on entertainment than on the cultural value of cinema, and they show a poor appreciation and identification with national cinema.

María Hernández-Herrera, Universidad de Las Américas (Ecuador)

Holds a degree in Audiovisual Communication (UCM, 2007) and in Journalism (URJC, 2010), and a Ph.D. in Film Theory, Analysis and Documentation from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM, 2015). She currently works as a professor of multimedia and audiovisual production and researcher at the Universidad de Las Américas in Quito, Ecuador. Her research areas are reception studies, perception studies, and textual semiotic analysis of artistic works based on the gathering of empirical information.

Arianni Batista, Universitat de Barcelona (Spain)

Holds a degree in Art History from the Universidad de Oriente (Cuba, 2007) and a master’s degree in Visual and Documentary Anthropology from the Latin American Institute of Social Science (FLACSO-Ecuador, 2013). She worked as an assistant-associate professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (2013-2014) and at the Universidad de Las Américas, Quito, Ecuador (2014-2017). During that time, she was part of different research projects. She is currently a pre-doctoral researcher at the Centro de Estudios Sobre Cultura, Política y Sociedad, Universitat de Barcelona, in Spain.

Daniel González, Universidad de Las Américas (Ecuador)

Holds a degree in Mathematics and is an engineer in Computer Sciences from the Universidad de la Rioja, in Spain, where he also did his Ph. D. in Applied Mathematics. His investigation is published in high-impact journals and he is a reviewer for several journals. He is currently a professor and researcher at the Universidad de Las Américas, in Quito, Ecuador.
