Interactivity, searchability and web visibility in award-winning digital journalism

Abstract

The main objective of this work is to carry out a comparative analysis between thirteen digital media websites that have won the Online Journalism Awards (ONA) and the World Digital Media Awards (WDMA) regarding the dimensions of interactivity, searchability and web visibility, through the application of an analysis protocol with nine parameters designed specifically for digital journalism (Santos-Hermosa et al. 2021;2022). In this sense, it is an innovative methodological proposal applied to a real case study in digital communication. The results show different levels of achievement of the dimensions of interactivity, navigability and visibility in the awarded digital media; that allows establishing a ranking from highest to lowest score. Some outstanding trends are also identified with respect to each dimension of study. This shows a series of successful strategies and weaknesses linked to interactivity, searchability and web visibility. The application of the protocol turns out to be useful not only for researchers but also for digital journalism professionals, providing data for the creation of new services and products focused on the user experience. The analysis protocol for Interactivity, Searchability and Visibility in Digital Journalism (SAIPD) is structured around nine study parameters, each of which has various indicators and all of which appear grouped into the three large dimensions of analysis. The results show different levels of achievement of the dimensions of interactivity, navigability and visibility in the awarded digital media; that allows establishing a descending ranking (from highest to lowest score). On the other hand, some outstanding trends are also identified with respect to each dimension of study. This shows a series of successful strategies and weaknesses linked to interactivity, searchability and web visibility. The application of the protocol turns out to be useful not only for researchers but also for digital journalism professionals, providing data for the creation of new services and products focused on the user experience.

Gema Santos-Hermosa, Universitat de Barcelona

Gema Santos, Ph.D. in Information and Communication Sciences from the Universidad de Barcelona. Professor at the Faculty of Information Sciences and Audiovisual Media at the same university and researcher at the Center for Research in Information, Communication and Culture (CRICC). She has also taught at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) and the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC). She currently co-directs the university course Ciencia Abierta: promoción, apoyo y evaluación (Open Science: promotion, support, and evaluation) at the Universidad de Barcelona.

Carlos Lopezosa, University of Barcelona

Carlos Lopezosa, visiting researcher at the Universidad de Barcelona (Margarita Salas postdoctoral fellowship). He has been an associate professor at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, teaching in the Faculty of Communication, in the Degrees of Journalism, Audiovisual Communication, and Advertising and Public Relations. He holds a Ph.D. in Information Sciences and is a SEO specialist.

Lluís Codina, University of Pompeu Fabra

Lluís Codina, Ph.D. from the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. Professor at the Faculty of Communication of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) and the master’s degree in Communication Research. Researcher at the Department of Communication of the same university. Professor at the UPF-Barcelona School of Management and member of the staff of the Online Master in Search Engines. Coordinator of the Research Unit in Journalism and Digital Documentation (UPF), as well as director of the Observatory of Cybermedia.
