Abstract

This article traces the development of the study of children’s literature and demonstrates the power of writing for children to have a political impact. A case study is given to exemplify the political power of writing for children by discussing Michael Morpurgo’s Shadow (2010) and the Yarl’s Wood Detention Centre for asylum seekers in the UK.

Jean Webb, University of Worcester

Professor Jean Webb is Director of the International Forum for Research in Children’s Literature at the University of Worcester, UK. She has been on the Executive Board of the Children’s Literature Association
and is currently a Board Member of the International Research Society for Children’s Literature. She has lectured widely internationally and also featured in media interviews, for example, for BBC Radio 4.
