Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine J. G. Fichte’s interpretation of some of Rousseau’s assertions. It begins with Fichte’s criticism of the Discours sur les sciences et les arts. After that, Fichte’s defense of Rousseau in the controversy against German conservatism concerning the French Revolution is analyzed. Finally Fichte’s doctrine of popular sovereignty is connected with the unresolved problems of Du contrat social.
