Abstract

The Popular Unitary Action Movement, MAPU (1969-1989), split from the DC to join the socialism and after a renewal helped the union of DC with the Socialists in the pragmatic “Concertación”. The MAPU demonstrates the “transformative/innovative” contribution of enlightened élites, who moves from rupture to play a role in founding of new coalitions. The traditional debate in political science of disruptive or functional élites can be enriched with the concept of transformative élite that shakes and then stabilizes the system in the modernization process. To someone’s might express a cynical pattern of accommodation, for others a case of flexibility. This article seeks to highlight the transformative role as a synthetic concept.
