Abstract

2008, which was the second year of Daniel Ortega’s “new administration” was marked by political polarisation, the confirmation that the Pact between Ortega and Alemán was still in place, despite declarations made by members of the Liberal Party, and the difficulty in translating the social policies implemented by the government into an improvement in the quality of life for the poorest citizens. In this context, Daniel Ortega maintained a notable continuity with the previous year with regard to both foreign and domestic policy, particularly the increase in the power of the First Lady, who became Minister of the Presidency. Finally, it
is necessary to highlight the importance of the municipal elections held on the 9th of November.
